Imagine if you made 19% more money in a span of a few months. Well, it looks like the tablet and smartphone industry did...
According to research done by Ooyala in the first quarter of 2013, of the total number of online video plays, 10% happened on a tablet or smartphone. And this was 19% more mobile plays than the previous year. That's huge growth.
Right, so how does this affect online video production? As people become more and more open to watching all types of videos on their smartphones and tablets, quality audio will become more and more important.
Yes there are those people who are happy watching a video with no audio. I don't know many of those people! But they exist. Then there is the rest of the world, the people who are surfing the web on their way to work, or while waiting for a friend, or on a break from class, and they're using headphones or earbuds. Have you ever tried to listen to bad audio with headphones on? It's painful. You want to stop watching, and you do, unless the content is vital to your survival or perceived social status. Since it's probably not...you stop watching.
Certain audio clean up techniques when used on poor quality audio will result in strange artifacts that sound a bit like an alien is trying to communicate with a penny whistle made of glass.
Nice image right. It's a weird weird sound. And the human ear does not like to listen to it. And this is just the audio that has been cleaned up. Don't even talk to me about the audio thats full of cracks and hisses and screetches and for some reason there is loud salsa music playing on the radio in the background, and oh wait, is that a train?
To sum up, as people start watching more and more video on their smartphones and tablets, it will become more and more important for online videomakers to pay attention to their audio and make sure it's very clean and clear.
Keep this in mind when you're hiring someone to make your next online video. Ask them about their clean sound capture techniques. Ask them if the audio on your video will sound good when listened to with earbuds. If they start mumbling and looking down at their hands, go find another video maker.
